My Top 5 Tips for Starting an Online Business

Psssst – are you reading this from work? Or are you getting ready to go to a night shift at your J-O-B?

I won’t tell, I promise!

If somewhere in the back of your mind you’re dreaming of a bit more freedom by working from home, check this out!  Here are my top 5 things you must do if you’re really considering starting an online business.

Top 5 Tips for Starting an Online Business

1.  Decide where you’ll work

You don’t have to have a “real office” (whatever that is!)  in your house. It’s nice if you do, of course!  But don’t let that stop you!  What you need is to figure out where your work space is. Even if it’s your kitchen table. Know where you will be working, organize your paperwork, and know that when you sit down to make calls to possible customers or clients, that it’s time for business!

2.  Think about childcare if need be

One of the benefits of working from home is that you don’t need to have childcare 40 hours a week. But let’s also be realistic – sometimes it’s tough to get things done with kids around!

So – it’s time to figure this out.  Because – you can either use your kids as your reason for doing this or your excuse for not doing this.  The results will be obvious as to which one you choose!

Childcare doesn’t have to break your budget. Talk to high school or college-age girls at your church.  Hire a “mother’s helper” if you’re going to be in the house with the kids. Or – do you have another mom who could use a few hours off?  Swap playdates once or twice a week for a few hours.

Begin training your kids that when you say it’s work time – it’s time for them to entertain themselves.  This doesn’t mean all day every day! But an hour or two on a regular basis is a good way to help them develop their creativity and independence, too.

3.  Act the part

What would happen if you were working a traditional job and you only showed up when you felt like it?  Or if you did Facebook all day on your work computer?

Eventually, you’d be job hunting, right?

So why is it okay for you to do that to your boss…aka, yourself?!

If you’re going to build a business from home, you’ve got to act the part. And that means showing up on time and giving it an honest day’s (or hour’s) effort.

4.  Find a tax professional

I know we don’t like taxes. But the old joke is still true – there’s nothing sure in life but death and taxes. And it’s always, always easier to think about taxes on your terms than it is to have an audit and owe back taxes.

So – keep great records throughout the year. I personally love Quickbooks for Self Employed, and I’ve tried ALL OF THEM.  No Really, I have!  You can swipe a free trial, and half off if you use my link too! Oh, and don’t forget tofind a good tax professional to work with before April 14th.

5.  New to being in business?  Find a “business in a box”

If you’re new to the idea of working from home or building a business, one of the easiest ways to get up and running with everything you need is to find something called a turnkey solution.  This is just a fancy way of saying a “business in a box. ”  It’s a business with a proven system that works to share your products and business with others.

This is what I love about network marketing, especially my business of course. When I started my business a little over 3 years ago, I’d been a mom, a nurse, a hairdresser, and a bartender. These were all the different ways I made ends meet while single parenting my 2 young sons.

I had a lot of different skills – but I didn’t have a clue how to build a business!  Luckily, I had the desire to learn, and was able to find many great resources to help me. (If I can do this while juggling multiple jobs, raising my sons by myself, and dealing with someone not paying child support, well, I know you can too if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and get to work!)
